[English]

Objectives:The present study aimed to investigate the effects of blood flow restriction(BFR), a training mask, and a military gas mask during resistance exercise on cardiovascular indices and ratings of perceived exertion(RPE) in young military men.Considering the critical importance of enhancing physical readiness in military units and the need to simulate operational conditions, the use of blood flow and respiratory restriction equipment such as a training mask or military gas mask can serve as innovative strategies to increase physiological strain and promote functional adaptations.Developing training programs capable of improving cardiovascular capacity and RPE tolerance in a short time frame, particularly through resistance-based protocols, is of significant operational relevance.
Methods:This semi-experimental pretest–posttest study included 12 trained military personnel (age: 27.75 ± 6.45 years; BMI: 25.41 ± 3.43 kg/m²),who were randomly assigned to four conditions: traditional resistance exercise, blood flow restriction, training mask, and military mask. RPE, heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, oxygen cost, and mean arterial pressure were assessed before and immediately after four sets of squat exercise totaling 65 repetitions.
Results:Mixed-model ANOVA revealed significant within group changes in RPE, heart rate, systolic blood pressure, oxygen cost, and mean arterial pressure, with some significant between-group and interaction effects(p<0.05). No significant differences were observed in diastolic blood pressure between groups. The greatest physiological changes were noted in the training mask and military mask groups.
Conclusion: These findings suggest that training and military gas masks can be employed as complementary tools in moderate-intensity military resistance training programs to acutely stimulate cardiovascular and perceptual responses.
