Objectives: Obesity and physical inactivity are among the most important public health challenges worldwide and in Iran, and they are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and other non-communicable diseases. Evidence indicates that the level of physical activity among adults—particularly women—is lower than the level recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). Given gender differences and the socio-cultural context of North Khorasan Province, monitoring physical activity in this region appears essential.
Methods: This applied research was a descriptive–analytical cross-sectional study. The study population consisted of men and women aged 18 years and older residing in North Khorasan Province, who were selected through multistage random sampling (approximately 385 participants). Data were collected using the long form of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics and the chi-square test in SPSS software.
Results: The highest levels of physical activity in both genders were observed in the domains of work and transportation. Men were significantly more active in moderate and vigorous activities, particularly in the work domain (p≤0/05), whereas women had a greater share of light-intensity and household activities. The main difference between the two genders was observed in the intensity of physical activity (p≤ 0/05).
Conclusion: The findings indicate a low level of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, especially among women. Designing culturally and socially tailored interventions based on the local context of the province is essential to promote physical activity.
