Abstract
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to compare the effect of low-volume and high-volume high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on serum levels of Irisin and anthropometric indicators related to the health of type 2 diabetic men.
Methods: In this randomized clinical trial, 30 male patients with type 2 diabetes were divided into three groups of 10, high-volume, low-volume HIIT exercises, and the control group. Low-volume groups did exercises for up to two minutes and high-volume groups for up to six minutes for 8 weeks. Irisin serum levels and anthropometric indices (LBM, WHtR, WHR, BMI and fat percentage) were measured before and 48 hours after the final training session. To analyze and compare the data, the pair t test, covariance and LSD post hoc test were used.
Results: There is a significant increase in serum Irisin concentration before and after 8 weeks of low-volume (p = 0.004) and high-volume (p = 0.000) HIIT exercises. And low-volume (p = 0.035) and high-volume (p = 0.001) HIIT exercises have significantly reduced the fat percentage of men with type 2 diabetes. In addition, high-volume HIIT exercises were significant in reducing the anthropometric index of WHtR, and low-volume HIIT exercises were significant in reducing the anthropometric indices of BMI, WHtR, and LBM.
Conclusion: According to the proven adaptability, HIIT exercises are useful exercises for type 2 diabetic patients. Therefore, considering the time saving, metabolic, functional and physiological adaptations of HIIT exercises, these exercises should be recommended for type 2 diabetes patients.
