Background and Purpose: Regular exercise and physical activity not only improve the health but also can prevent many diseases. Regular exercise can somehow modulate gene expression. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of low continuous and high interval intensity exercise with crocin treatment on the expression of AP-1 and NF-κB gene in the heart tissue of obese male Wistar rats.
Methodology: In this study, 42 obese male Wistar rats were randomly divided to 7 groups: high-intensity interval exercise, low-intensity continuous exercise, high-intensity interval exercise with Crocin, low-intensity continuous exercise with Crocin, Crocin, sham and control. Crocin was injected intraperitoneally (25mg/kg). Two-way analysis of variance and t-test were used to analyze data (p<0.05).
Results: The results showed that Crocin significantly reduced NF-κB and AP-1 gene expression levels (respectively 0.301, 0.109) compared to the obese control group (p=0/001). Continuous exercise with Crocin significantly reduced AP-1 gene expression level (0.049) compared to the obese control group (p=0/001). The results also showed that the continuous exercise and Crocin had no significant effect on NF-κB gene expression level.
Conclusion: Continuous exercise and Crocin decreased AP-1 gene expression in the heart tissue of obese male rats. According to the results, it seems that the significant decrease in the expression of AP-1gene is due to the interactive effects between low-intensity continuous exercise and Crocin consumption. Also, low-intensity continuous exercise has more protective effects on the expression of AP-1 gene in heart tissue compared to high-intensity interval exercise.
