Abstract

Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of eight weeks of Pilates training at home and outdoor on vitamin D levels and physical fitness of women with multiple sclerosis (MS) during the coronavirus outbreak
Methods: forty-four women with MS (with 2-5 EDSS) were voluntarily selected and randomly divided into three groups of training at home (n=15), outdoor training (n=15) and the control group (n=14). The training program was implemented three sessions a week for eight weeks. The indicators of balance, muscular endurance, cardio-respiratory endurance and upper body flexibility of the subjects were measured before and after training program.
Results: After eight weeks of Pilates training, there was a significant difference between the groups in the indices of cardiorespiratory endurance, muscle endurance, balance and vitamin D levels (P≤0.05). In terms of flexibility, it was observed that there is a significant difference between the two exercise groups in the outdoor with the control group and the Pilates exercise group at home with the control group (P≤0.05). Vitamin D levels in the outdoor Pilates group had increased significantly compared to the control group and the home exercise group (P≤0.05). However, no significant difference was observed between the control group and home practice.
Conclusion: Probably, practicing Pilates at home and exposed to the sun can improve some indicators of physical fitness in women with multiple sclerosis. The results indicated a more effective role of exercise exposed to the sun on balance and muscle endurance. Also, Pilates exercise at home is recommended for MS patients due to the lack of special facilities, low cost, safe, and controllable intensity and duration.
