The effect of acute bout of aerobic activity with moderate intensities on CD34+ stem cells circulating numbers in middle-aged men

Abstract

Background&Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of acute bout  of aerobic activity with moderate intensities on CD34+ stem cells  circulating numbers in middle-aged men.
Methodology: 24 middle aged men (Age 51.21 ± 3.51 yrs, Height 174.71 ± 5.67 cm and Weight 82.15 ± 8.94 kg) selected as the samples in this study and randomly divided into 3 groups (control group N: 8, experimental group A N: 8, experimental group B N:8). experimental groups (A:60% and B:70% VO2max) ran for 30 minutes on the treadmill. To measuring CD34+ stem cells, befor and 10 minutes after the test protocol, blood samples were taken. To compare variation between and within the groups, we used One-Way analysis of variance test (ANOVA) and paired- samples T Test, respectively.
Results: Both intensity of aerobic activity significantly increased the number of CD34+ cells, in group A, this increase was 14% (P = 0.002), while this effect was higher in group B with 22% (P =0.003), but no significant difference was observed between the two groups and the control group no significant change from pre-test to post-test (P= 0.082). The relationship between changes in levels of CD34+ cells with LDL/HDL and Chol/HDL ratios was not significant.
Conclusion: aerobic activity with intensities 60% and 70% of Vo2max can significantly increased the number of circulating CD34+ cell in the peripheral blood and because of the potential role of these cells in neo-angiogenesis and vasculogenesis, they can possibly help repair and regeneration vessels.
