The Effects of four hours of sleep deprivation on cardiovascular factors and fatigue index in morning and evening

Abstract

Background&Purpose: Some studies have indicated that sleep deprivation induce different effects on athlete's performance. However, little attention has been paid to the effects of circadian rhythm on sleep deprivation. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of 4 hours of sleep deprivation on anaerobic power, some cardiovascular factors including heart rate, blood pressure and perceived exertion following a boat of exercise in the morning and evening.
Material and Methods: 23 female collegiate athletes (21.47±0.730 year, 160.4± 4.82 cm, 56.26± 1.07 kg) voluntarily participated in this study. Anaerobic power (wingate test), blood pressure and heart rate (rest and following exercise test), and perceived exertion tests were performed during four separated sessions.  ANOVA with reapeated measures and post hoc test of Bonferroni were used for data analysis.
Results: 4 hours of sleep deprivation caused significant reduction of perceived exertion (p=0.03), but did not cause any significant effect on morning perceived exertion, morning and evening anaerobic power, heart rate and blood pressure.
Conclusions: Since sleep deprivation increases athlete’s perceived exertion in evening, enough sleep is recommended for evening competitions.
