Abstract

Background&Purpose: Apoptosis is a highly conserved cellular process that plays an important role in normal tissue development and homeostasis as well as in the pathogenesis of disease. Current evidence suggests that exercise trainings may alter apoptosis-related signaling in skeletal muscle. Therefore, the purpose of this study was investigating the effect of three month of aerobic interval training on some indices of skeletal muscle apoptosis in rats.
Methodology: This study was conducted as a two-group experimental design. Twenty 3-month-old male rats randomly divided into two groups of aerobic interval training and control. Rats in interval training group participated in the aerobic interval training program for three month. Two day after the last training session, the soleus muscle of rats were extracted and Bax, Bcl-2 and caspase-3 genes expression evaluated by Real Time-PCR. Independent t-test was applied for statistical analysis of the data (P< 0.05).
Results: The results showed that there is a significant difference between the control and training group in Bcl-2 (P= 0.002) gene expression and Bax/Bcl-2 ratio (P= 0.048). Bcl-2 gene expression in training group is greater than control group, while Bax/Bcl2 ratio of control group was greater than training group. Moreover, there was no significant difference between the two groups in Bax and caspase-3 expression (P> 0.05).
Conclusion: In general, it seems that three-month aerobic interval training was effective in increasing skeletal muscle mitochondrial anti-apoptotic protein. However, considering the no significant decrease in caspase-3 expression, more researches are needed to identify effects of trainings on skeletal muscle apoptosis.
