The effect of Mode of Exercise Testes and Age on Fat Oxidation Rate among 9- to 17-year-old girls

Abstract

Introduction and Purpose: Running and cycling are two modalities of exercise commonly used to promote fat oxidation in sport programs. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of mode of exercise tests and age on the fat oxidation rate among 9- to 17-year-old girls.
Methodology: 36 healthy girls participated voluntarily in this study. Subjects attended to lab in three sessions. In first session height, weight and anthropometric characteristics were measured, thereafter; they were made familiar with protocols and instruments. In the second and third session, subject performed ramp protocol in treadmill and cycle in counterbalance. Oxygen consumption and heart rate were recorded using gas analyzer. To evaluate impact of mode of exercise tests and age, independent T test and ANOVA were used respectively.
 Results: values of maximal fat oxidation (MFO) were higher in treadmill compared to cycle (P=0.0001) but there was no significant differences in respiratory exchange ratio at MFO between two types of exercise tests. Values of MFO (p=0.009), FATmax
based % HRmax (p=0.047), and respiratory exchange ratio at MFO (P=0.011) were
different between age groups.
Conclusion: When using ramp protocol, fat oxidation was higher on treadmill compared to cycle. Also fat oxidation was reduced with increasing age in 9 to 17 years girls
