Abstract

Background&Purpose: Myonectin is a novel myokine expressed predominantly by the skeletal muscle and initial studies revealed a role in fatty acid uptake and oxidation in adipose tissue and liver. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of eight weeks of resistance training on plasma myonectin levels in obese men.
Methodology: Twenty three obese men (age; 37.0 ± 8.5 yr, weight; 95.8 ± 11.2 kg, and BMI; 31.8 ± 2.5 kg/m2) voluntarily participated in this study, and were divided into control (n=11) and resistance training (n=12) groups. Subjects in training group performed eight weeks resistance training in a circuit manner with 50-85% 1RM (3 days/week). Anthropometrics parameters and fasting plasma lipid profile and myonectin levels were measured at the baseline and at the end of study. Data were analyzed using independent and paired t-test, and Pearson correlation tests in significance level of P< 0.05.
Results: Plasma myonectin levels significantly increased following eight weeks circuit resistance training (P< 0.008). This training program induced significant reductions in body weight, BMI, body fat percentage and plasma total cholesterol levels (P< 0.05). Also, a marginal decrease was observed in LDL levels (P= 0.07). We did not find significant correlation between changes in plasma myonectin levels and changes in lipid profile or anthropometrics parameters.
Conclusion: Our findings showed that circuit resistance training can be an effective intervention to elevated plasma myonectin levels in obese men. It seems that changes in plasma myonectin levels is independent of changes in the amount or percentage of body fat and changes in the lipid profile.
